Screen & schedule

The Screen & schedule panel controls when the screen switches on and off. To get there, open the WallAwake menu, tap Open settings and choose Screen & schedule.

Weekly screen schedule

For each day of the week you can tick the day and set an On time and an Off time, written as HH:mm in 24-hour time. A ticked day switches the screen off from its off time until its on time. The rest of the time the screen stays on, including on any day you did not tick. An off period that runs past midnight ends at its own on time, no matter how the next day is set.

Under each ticked day WallAwake writes out what you set, for example Off from 23:00 until 06:30 the next day.

For each day you use, enter both times. Hours run from 0 to 23, minutes from 00 to 59, and the on time and the off time must be different.

Manual override duration (minutes)

If you turn the screen on by hand during a scheduled off period, it stays on for this many minutes before switching off again. The default is 10 minutes. Enter a whole number of at least 1.

Keep the screen on

Keep the screen on is on by default. It prevents Android's normal screen timeout while WallAwake is showing the dashboard. Scheduled off periods still apply. If you turn this option off, Android's normal screen timeout can switch the screen off while the dashboard is open.

Screen control access

For the schedule to switch the screen, Android has to allow four things. This section shows which of them are still missing and gives each a Fix button that takes you to the right place.

  • Permission to lock the screen. WallAwake needs this to switch the screen off according to the schedule. It uses only the device administrator's lock-screen function, not functions to change passwords, disable the camera or erase device data.
  • Permission for exact alarms. Without it the screen cannot switch on at the right time.
  • Notifications for the wake alarm, at high importance. Without them the screen cannot switch on.
  • Permission to show a full-screen alarm. Without it the screen cannot switch on.

As long as no day is ticked, the schedule does not control the screen and needs no access, and this section says so. If you tick a day or save an active schedule while something is missing, WallAwake warns This schedule will not work yet and tells you what is missing. A tablet that does not support the lock permission cannot switch the screen off automatically.

Battery and Do Not Disturb advice

While a schedule is active, WallAwake can show advice below the access list. It does not block anything.

  • If battery use for WallAwake is set to Restricted, Android can stop the app between wake times, so the screen may stay off. Set it to unrestricted. The Battery settings button opens the right Android screen.
  • If Do Not Disturb is set to Total silence, the wake-time notification still comes through, but the screen will not turn on. Switch to a different Do Not Disturb setting, or turn it off, before the next wake time. The Do Not Disturb settings button opens the Android settings.

Testing the schedule

To check that the whole chain works on your tablet, use Test this tablet under diagnostics in the Device & security panel.

Changes on this panel are stored when you tap Save settings.
