Device & security

The Device & security panel holds the settings that concern the tablet itself. To get there, open the WallAwake menu, tap Open settings and choose Device & security.

After a restart or update

Reopen after a restart or update is on by default. With the required Android permission, WallAwake can open again after the tablet restarts or the app is updated. Turn this off if you prefer to open WallAwake yourself.

For this, Android has to allow Display over other apps for WallAwake. WallAwake uses that permission for nothing else. If it is not allowed yet, the panel says WallAwake cannot reopen by itself and shows an Allow button that takes you to the right Android screen. Until then WallAwake shows a notification, WallAwake did not reopen, that opens the app with one tap.

WallAwake cannot unlock a tablet protected by a PIN, password or pattern. Unlock it after a restart before WallAwake can reopen. A scheduled wake may also show the lock screen instead of the dashboard. With a swipe lock, WallAwake can display over the lock screen without unlocking the tablet.

PIN

Protect the settings with a PIN asks for a PIN before the settings open or the app is closed. It keeps someone from wandering in by accident. It is not a device lock, and it does not stop anyone who really wants to leave the app.

A PIN has 4 to 8 digits. Change PIN changes it, and turning the switch off removes it. Write the PIN down: there is no way to look it up, and no way to reset it from inside the app.

After five wrong attempts in a row, WallAwake makes you wait before you can try again, for example Try again in 30 s. The wait grows with every further wrong attempt, up to 15 minutes.

Forgot your PIN

  1. Swipe down from the top edge to show Android's system bars, then open Quick Settings and tap the settings icon. You may need to swipe down again. The exact steps vary by tablet.
  2. Open Apps, pick WallAwake and clear its data.

Clearing app data removes the PIN and all locally stored WallAwake data, including your start URL, schedule, other settings, photo copies and website data. You then set up WallAwake again. Original photos outside the app are not deleted.

Home screen

Offer this app as the home screen makes WallAwake available as Android's home app. Choose WallAwake in Android to have the Home button return to your dashboard. The panel shows the current choice and offers Choose the home screen when you need to select it. You can change the default home app again in Android's settings.

This is separate from Reopen after a restart or update, which is about a restart, not about the Home button.

To stop using WallAwake as your home screen, turn off Offer this app as the home screen. If a PIN is set, you will be asked for it. You can also open Android's settings through Quick Settings and choose another default home app. The steps vary by tablet. If you cannot reach the settings, check the tablet manufacturer's instructions for safe mode.

Diagnostics

Open diagnostics contains tools to test the screen schedule and menu gesture on your tablet. WallAwake does not send diagnostic information to the developer.

  • Test this tablet switches the screen off for a short time and lets the schedule wake it again, so you can see whether the whole chain works. The power button always keeps working. Run the test during an on period, otherwise the schedule wants the screen off anyway and the test measures nothing.
  • Wake history lists the scheduled wake times and whether each one woke the screen, was refused or was missed.
  • Screen events lists what the app did to the screen and what it noticed, most recent first.
  • Menu gesture log lists the last decisions of the gesture recogniser.

About WallAwake

Shows the version of the app, with links to the website and the privacy policy. They open in the default browser of your tablet.

Changes on this panel are stored when you tap Save settings, except the PIN, which is stored or removed as soon as you set or remove it.
