What WallAwake does
WallAwake is an Android app that displays your chosen website full-screen on a wall tablet, such as your Home Assistant dashboard. You can set a weekly screen schedule and enable a photo frame for your own photos.
Data used by the app
WallAwake does not send usage data to the developer. There is no WallAwake account, advertising or analytics, and the app has no crash reporting of its own. If you installed WallAwake from Google Play, Google may share crash and stability data with the developer through Android vitals, depending on your Android settings. Settings, selected photo copies and website data are stored locally on your tablet. WebView diagnostic reporting to Google is disabled in the app.
Google Safe Browsing
The app uses Google Safe Browsing through Android WebView to help detect unsafe websites. Safe Browsing may communicate with Google to check for threats. This is handled by WebView under Google's terms and privacy policy. The developer does not receive the data from these checks.
Local storage
WallAwake stores the following data in the app's private storage on your tablet:
- The web address of your dashboard.
- Your weekly schedule and other settings.
- An optional PIN, stored as a hash rather than as readable digits.
- Cookies and website storage of the site you configure.
- For the photo frame: copies of photos you choose yourself through Android's photo picker, resized and stripped of metadata such as location. The app cannot access your other photos.
- Diagnostic logs: the last 750 screen event lines, a wake history of the last 200 scheduled screen-on times, a menu gesture log of the last 100 decisions of the gesture recogniser, and the results of the last 10 screen tests. They hold times, outcomes and numbers, nothing about the pages you open.
- Raw touch points (the screen position and time of each touch, nothing from the web page). This is off by default. You can turn it on with Also record raw touch data in the diagnostics, and it switches itself off after 15 minutes or 200 touch points.
WallAwake does not send any of these logs to the developer. The Clear website data button does not remove them; clearing the app's data or uninstalling the app does.
If a website uses HTTP authentication, WallAwake shows a Sign in required dialog. The username and password are held in WebView's memory while the app process is running. WallAwake does not write them to disk. They are cleared when the process ends, including when you leave through Exit WallAwake. This is separate from website logins that use stored cookies.
Deleting your data
Clear website data through the app's settings. To remove everything, clear the app's data or uninstall the app.
Permissions the app requests
| Permission | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Internet | To load your website. |
| Network state | Only to check whether the tablet is connected to a network: to tell you when there is no connection, and to reload your dashboard as soon as the connection is back. |
| Notifications | To let you know when something needs attention. The scheduled switch-on of the screen also works through a visible notification, so if notifications for WallAwake are turned off, or its Screen wake alarm notifications are set to a lower priority, the screen does not turn on by itself at the set time. |
| Exact alarms | To switch the screen at the times you set. |
| Full-screen notification | To turn the screen on at the time you set. |
| Run at startup | To reopen your dashboard after a restart. |
| Display over other apps | Only to reopen the dashboard after a restart. The app never draws over any other app. |
| Device admin | Only the "lock screen" function, to turn the screen off at the time you set. |
Your website
The website you configure is not ours. What that website does with data is covered by its own privacy policy.
Donations
If you donate through this website, PayPal processes the payment under its own terms and privacy policy. The developer can see your name, email address and donation amount in PayPal. This website does not load PayPal scripts, images or fonts. Your browser connects to PayPal only when you open the PayPal link on the donation page.
This website (wallawake.app)
This website uses no cookies, no analytics, and no external scripts or fonts. The site is hosted by Cloudflare; like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address to deliver and secure the site.
Changes
If we change this policy, we update the date at the top of the page.
Who is responsible
WallAwake is made by Victor Elsenaar, the Netherlands. He is responsible for the personal data described on this page.
Support emails
Email to support@wallawake.app is forwarded by Cloudflare to the developer's Gmail mailbox, a service of Google. Your email address and message are used only to answer your question, and are kept no longer than needed for that. One exception: if you ask to become a tester, your email address is also shared with Google to add you to the testers list in Google Play. It stays on that list until the test ends or you ask to be removed.
Why your data may be used
- Support emails: to answer your question (legitimate interest).
- Tester list: to give you access to the test version through Google Play, when you ask for it (legitimate interest).
- Donations: to receive your donation through PayPal (legitimate interest).
- Android vitals: to find and fix crashes in the app (legitimate interest).
Services outside the EU
Google, PayPal and Cloudflare may process data outside the European Economic Area. They do so under the safeguards described in their own privacy policies.
Your rights
You can ask which personal data the developer has about you, and have it corrected or deleted. You can also object to its use or ask to limit it. Email support@wallawake.app and you will get an answer as soon as possible.
If you think your data is not handled properly, you can file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) at autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl.
