What WallAwake does
WallAwake is an Android app that shows one website you choose — for example your Home Assistant dashboard — full-screen on a tablet mounted on the wall. The screen turns on and off according to a weekly schedule you set, and can optionally show your own photos as a photo frame.
What data we collect
WallAwake does not collect any personal data and sends nothing to the developer. There is no account, no advertising, no analytics or statistics feature, and no crash reporting.
One exception: Safe Browsing
To protect you from malicious websites, the app uses Android's built-in Safe Browsing feature. Android checks the addresses that are loaded against Google's lists. Android does this itself, under Google's terms — the developer of WallAwake never sees this data.
What stays on your tablet only
The following data lives only in the app's private storage, on your own tablet:
- The web address of your dashboard.
- Your weekly schedule and other settings.
- An optional PIN code — only as an irreversible hash, never as the code itself.
- Cookies and website storage of the site you configure.
- For the photo frame: copies of photos you choose yourself through Android's photo picker, resized and stripped of metadata such as location. The app cannot access your other photos.
- A log of screen events (the last 750 lines) for troubleshooting. This log never leaves the tablet.
If your website asks for a username and password in a browser login prompt, Android holds onto them only while the app is running. The app itself does not store them.
Backups and new devices
None of the above is included in a cloud backup or when transferring to a new device.
Deleting your data
Clear website data through the app's settings. To remove everything, clear the app's data or uninstall the app.
Permissions the app requests
| Permission | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Internet | To load your website. |
| Notifications | To let you know when something needs attention. |
| Exact alarms | To switch the screen at the times you set. |
| Full-screen notification | To turn the screen on at the time you set. |
| Run at startup | To reopen your dashboard after a restart. |
| Display over other apps | Only to reopen the dashboard after a restart. The app never draws over any other app. |
| Device admin | Only the "lock screen" function, to turn the screen off at the time you set. |
Your website
The website you configure is not ours. What that website does with data is covered by its own privacy policy.
